Don't be afraid to try something new or different!
Elizabeth Chew shares her experience in C3’s children programmes, GROW & StoryLAB.
I’ve been a volunteer with Calvary Community Care (C3) since July 2020. I’m part of the StoryLAB programme where I read to children every Monday. I also volunteer at GROW, where I teach children basic reading skills and phonemic awareness.
One of the most memorable experiences for me was when I was trying to teach a child how to put words together using sounds. What happened next was that he repeated the wrong sound after I accidentally said the wrong sound. It showed me how important it is to teach young children well because they learn from all our words and actions fast.
If you love kids but don’t know how to interact with them, I would still encourage you to join C3’s programmes. You can learn along the way from all the friendly volunteers. Don’t be afraid to try something new or different. There’s a child out there who is looking forward to learning from you.😊
